IOAN IAC D G ARCHIEPS SALZ A S LE 157Z, coat of arms, galero (cardinal's hat), cross and crosier / SANCTVS RVD BERTVS EPS SAL, St. Rudbertus with miter, blessing right hand and crosier enthroned facing front under a Gothic canopy, on each side an upright lion.
This impressive 6 Taler was struck to commemorate the overcoming of the plague. Between May 1571 and January 1572, the plague had raged Salzburg and claimed 2,236 lives - almost a third of the city's population at the time.
Minor traces of tooling on the right reverse field. Beautiful cabinet patina. Of the highest rarity.
