10 Scudi 1624, Genoa. 32.15 g. Minor clipping. The only specimen known in private hands.
Genoa's coins bore the same images over centuries: a city gate on the obverse and a cross on the reverse. The reverse legend on this magnificent coin is atypical for Genoa as it is one of the few pieces bearing the inscription "IN HOC SALVS MVNDI". The reverse legends of the Republic's coins usually referred to Conrad III, King of the Holy Roman Empire, who had granted Genoa the right to mint coins in 1139. The cross on the reverse was probably the cross of Jerusalem and a reference to Conrad, who had participated in the Second Crusade.
