The large, important, and popular Portuguese gold coins, Portugalöser, minted from 1499 were imitated in Northern Germany. Also by Johann Adolf as bishop in Lübeck. He was (also) Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp and was on good terms with the regional counterpart, the Danish king Christian IV. Johan Adolf reigned successfully 1593-1616 and in 1596 married Auguste, Christian IV's sister.
Extremely rare.
